Measuring AI visibility: from share of voice to GeoReady score

Which numbers actually tell you where you stand in AI answers? Visibility, share of voice, position, sentiment and citation share explained—and how to combine them into one score everyone understands.

“We show up in ChatGPT” isn't a measurement. A measurement is a number you can recalculate every week, compare with your competitors and tie to actions. This article walks through the KPIs of AI visibility and explains how we combine them into the GeoReady score.

Visibility

The share of AI answers (prompts × AI models × runs) in which your business is mentioned at least once. This is the base metric. Because answers vary, you run each prompt several times a day and report a probability. 23% means you appear in almost a quarter of answers. Broken down by AI model, you see where you win and where you lose.

Share of voice

Your mentions divided by all mentions of all tracked businesses. Visibility tells you whether you're there. Share of voice tells you how much room you take up compared with your competitors. A visibility of 23% with a share of voice of 18% means that in the answers where you appear, you usually sit next to several competitors.

Position and sentiment

When you're mentioned: how early in the answer, and in what tone? The first name in an AI answer gets a disproportionate share of attention. Sentiment measures whether you're mentioned with a recommendation, neutrally or with a caveat (“great work, but long wait times”). Both belong next to visibility. Otherwise 23% is a number without meaning.

Citation share

Your share of the sources AI cites. This is the “why” metric: it explains differences in visibility and points to the fix. Read more in our article on sources and citations.

One score for everyone

Five numbers are too many for a leadership meeting. So we fold them into the GeoReady score, a number from 0 to 100: visibility weighs 50%, share of voice 20%, position 15% and sentiment 15%. Four bands make it readable: below 25 is invisible, 25–50 present, 50–75 leading, 75 and up dominant. A ranking of all tracked businesses on this score shows at a glance where you stand and how many points separate you from the leader.

The weighting is a choice, not a law of nature. We put heavy weight on visibility because being mentioned is the precondition for everything else, and use sentiment and position as a correction: a mention with a “but” in fifth place is worth less than a recommendation in first.

What “good” looks like

It depends on the industry. That's why we compare your score with the median of similar businesses in our benchmark. For HVAC companies in Northern Virginia, that median is around 38; above 50, you're leading in your region. Without a benchmark, every score is just a number.

In short

Track visibility, share of voice, position, sentiment and citation share—and roll them into one score with a benchmark, so everyone in your business knows where you stand.
