Local businesses and AI: become the “contractor near me” ChatGPT recommends

For local service businesses, AI is an opportunity: competition per region is manageable and the levers are concrete. What AI models do with “near me,” and how to become the business they mention most.

“A good plumber in Alexandria,” “accountant for freelancers in Northern Virginia,” “heat pump installation Fairfax”—a large share of the advice people ask AI for is local. And local is where small businesses win, once they know how AI models handle city names and service areas.

How AI interprets “near me”

Unlike Google Maps, ChatGPT doesn't know where you are unless you tell it. The model uses the place name in the question and looks for businesses tied to that place in its sources. Google AI Mode does know your location and leans heavily on Google Business Profiles. Both reward businesses that name their service area explicitly and consistently: not just “Northern Virginia,” but the cities and neighborhoods customers actually ask about.

The local sources

For local questions, the source mix shifts. Next to national comparison sites, regional news sites, city and county pages, local business associations and review platforms start to count. A story in the regional paper about one of your projects, a profile with the local chamber of commerce and an up-to-date Google Business Profile with reviews carry more weight locally than a national mention.

Your service area on your site

Create a page for each core city or region that answers the customer's question. Not an empty “HVAC contractor in [city]” page, but a page with real information: projects in that city, local rules or rebates, travel time, reviews from customers there. AI models can tell a generated city page from a page with substance.

Reviews as a source

For AI models, reviews are a key source for sentiment and for concrete traits (“shows up on time,” “clean work”). Collect them where AI reads: Google, the main comparison site in your industry and, if relevant, Trustpilot. Respond to critical reviews. AI models sometimes cite the response.

A realistic goal

In most local markets, three to six businesses capture the vast majority of AI mentions. The path into that group runs through consistent business information, the regional sources and answer-focused pages for each service area. A business that does this systematically can go from “invisible” to “present” in a quarter—and into its region's top three in six months.

In short

Locally, the market is small: a handful of sources, a handful of competitors. The business that names its service area clearly and consistently becomes the name AI recommends.
