Most businesses that start with GEO have invested in SEO for years. So the question is: which parts of that work still count, and what do you need to add? The honest answer: the foundation stays, what you build on top of it changes.
What stays the same
A technically healthy website, fast load times, a clear structure, good content and authority. Both SEO and GEO depend on them. An AI model reads your site with the same kind of crawlers Google uses, and sites that link to you signal trust to AI too. If your SEO is in order, you start with a head start.
Difference 1: a list vs. an answer
Google shows ten links, and the user picks one. AI shows one answer with a few names, and the model does the picking. In SEO, position seven still has value. In GEO, position seven doesn't exist. The bar is higher, but so is the reward: if you're named, you get a recommendation instead of a click.
Difference 2: pages vs. entities
Google ranks pages. AI models reason about entities: businesses, products, people. Whether your business gets named depends less on one strong page and more on how often and how consistently your business shows up across all sources. Your business profile (name, location, specialty, price level) needs to be accurate and match everywhere.
Difference 3: your own site vs. other people's sites
In SEO, you mostly work on your own website. In GEO, the sources AI cites matter at least as much: comparison sites, trade media, forums, industry associations. In many small-business markets, five to twelve domains account for most of the citations. Getting listed there pays off more than ten new blog posts on your own site.
Difference 4: stable vs. variable
Google rankings move slowly. AI answers vary by model, by day and by phrasing. That calls for a different way to measure: not one position per week, but a probability per prompt per model, calculated over multiple runs. It also calls for a different way to steer: on trends and share, not on a single spot.
How to combine both
- Keep your SEO foundation: technical health, content, authority.
- Add GEO tracking: visibility per model, sources, competitors.
- Shift part of your link building to "source building": mentions on sites AI reads.
- Rewrite key pages as answers: direct, concrete, easy to compare.
- Report both KPIs side by side to leadership or clients.
SEO is still the foundation. GEO is the layer on top that decides whether you're in the answer when the customer no longer scrolls.
