If you want to know why a competitor keeps getting named and you don't, don't look at their website. Look at the sources the AI model reads. They're in there, and you're not. This article is about those sources: how they work, how to track them and how to get into them.
What a citation is
A citation is a source an AI model references in or below its answer: a URL it pulled information from. Perplexity shows them as numbered references, ChatGPT and Gemini as links. A single answer usually has three to eight citations. Across hundreds of answers, a clear picture emerges: a small number of domains supply most of the citations in a market.
The sources AI trusts
In small-business markets, they're almost always the same types: comparison and review sites, trade media and industry associations, forums (Reddit and niche communities), local media and government sites with regulations or rebate information. A business's own website does get cited, but often only after the business showed up in another source first.
What stands out is how concentrated this is. Often a dozen domains account for the vast majority of all citations in a market. That keeps the strategy simple: you don't need to be everywhere. You need to be in twelve places.
Citation share: the metric that explains the gap
Citation share is your share of all citations that appear in answers to your prompts, including citations of pages on other sites that are about you. It often explains better than any other metric why one competitor gets named more than another. A business with 14% citation share against a competitor with 34% doesn't need to write better. It needs to be in more sources.
How to get in
- Comparison sites and directories: sign up, complete your profile and ask customers for reviews there.
- Trade media: pitch an expert article or case study on a concrete question in your market.
- Associations and certifications: make sure your member listing is current and complete.
- Forums: take part in discussions honestly. AI models cite threads where a business genuinely helps.
- Local media: a press release about a project or innovation gets cited surprisingly often.
What not to do
No fake reviews, no paid mentions on irrelevant sites, no hundred directory listings. AI models weigh consistency and context. A mention on a site the model never reads doesn't count, and an untrustworthy review can hurt your sentiment. Focus on the twelve sources from your tracking, in order of citations.
AI doesn't write about your business. It writes what its trusted sources say about your business. Track those sources and work through the list.
